I love summa time! Although pictured above is me in the rain. My hair was perfectly straight but with humidity it just does its thang. Since Utah weather is as unpredictable as a women scorned I come prepared with layers. I’m the real life version of Shrek. That  probably sounds harsher than I meant but you know. Ogres have layers and so does this girl. I fell in love with these lil booties right away and wear them with everything!

Oh and of course I have to throw in some nutritional tid bits but my friend ordered this Iced Peach Green Tea. I gave it a swirl and let’s just say it’s only good as a prop. It was gross and at 20 grams of sugar I’d rather get more bang for my buck. I’m a Starbucks bandwagon consumer. I got hooked on my fav drink of all time the Cool Lime Refresher. It does have 13 grams of sugar but it’s tasty and falls on the 20 side of my 80/20 rule. I’m no barista but I’m going to figure out a cleaner version for the sake of my immune system and my wallet from that overpriced mermaid.

I’m sure you’ve guessed by now but I’m a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and we abide by the Word of Wisdom which is pretty much a law of health.

The spirit of the law is that we take care of our bodies. That means we exercise, get good sleep, stay within a healthy weight, stay away from any and all addictive substances and eat without wasting and full of thanksgiving. Even though this was in the 1800’s it still applies today and even to those who aren’t Christian it’s some pretty relevant advice for everyone who adorns the human body. 😉

So why am I talking about religion? Well first the entire reason I got interested in nutrition was by being introduced to Christianity through the Bible and even more specific was by the story of Daniel and his friends! They were strong mentally and physically through their diet. Then second reason is there is a lot of controversy on if Green tea does actually fall under the “tea” part of the Word of Wisdom since Herbal Teas and African Tea do not.

Here’s the 411 on Tea

  • Black tea is the most popular variety in the United States. When you drink a regular cup of hot tea, iced tea, or sweet tea, you are drinking black tea. Black tea comes from tea leaves that were exposed to the air and allowed to fully oxidize or ferment, changing the leaves from green to black.
  • Oolong tea varies in the fermentation time. It therefore falls between black and green tea.
  • Green tea is less processed and is not fermented like black tea is. These tea leaves therefore retain their green color and delicate flavor.
  • White tea is the least processed of all teas. The leaves are picked at a very young stage and are only dried in the sun.

Other stuff that is fermented:

  1. Alcoholic fermentation, also referred to as ethanol fermentation, is a biological process in which sugars such as glucose, fructose, and sucrose are converted into cellular energy and thereby produce ethanol and carbon dioxide as metabolic waste product.
  2. Coffee fermentationhas to be carefully monitored to ensure that the coffee doesn’t acquire undesirable, sour flavors. This is done by wet process, dry process or semi dry process but all coffee beans go through a fermentation process.

Is it this fermentation that we are being warned about? Is it the caffeine? We don’t know so we have faith that the big man upstairs does. However, each of us have a personal “Word of Wisdom” that we should abide by. If you are allergic to dairy than you include that. If you are sensitive to gluten then add that in there. If your addicted to sugar or Diet Coke toss that in there. Your relationship with God is personal, His revelation to you is personal so with that being said, educate yourself and just use your best judgement on how you treat your body.

Fun Fact: When Great Britain imposed a Tea Tax in 1767 it infuriated the colonist and that sparked the Boston Tea Party of 1773, where 45 tons of green tea (called “bullet” tea because of its shape during shipping)

Word of Wisdom as defined by Mormon.org the official website of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

What is the Word of Wisdom that Mormons talk about?

Official Answer

Our body is a precious gift from God. To help keep our bodies and our minds healthy and strong, God gave a law of health to Joseph Smith in 1833. This law is known as the Word of Wisdom (see Doctrine and Covenants 89:1-21).

In addition to emphasizing the benefits of proper eating and physical and spiritual health, God has spoken against the use of:

  • Tobacco.
  • Alcohol.
  • Coffee and tea.
  • Illegal drugs.

God promises great physical and spiritual blessings to those who follow the Word of Wisdom. Today, the scientific community promotes some of the same principles that a loving God gave to Joseph Smith nearly two centuries ago.

I love the Word of Wisdom! All my life I’ve been blessed by avoiding the prohibitions you’ve listed. But lately I’ve become interesting in living by the rest of the wise counsel in D&C 89: wholesome plants, meat sparingly in times of need, and grains as the “staff of life.” I’ve written a book and am collecting stories of other Latter-day Saints who are trying to live the Word of Wisdom more fully!
